When Stories Are Made into Movies

Have you ever noticed differences?

I just watched a 3-movie series made from (excuse me, “based on”) the novels written by an author. I am assuming, since the author is still alive, that she had some say in the making of the movies, although the two (movies and books) shared only the names of the characters and some of the other names, like cities and factions.

The titles of the books and movies were the same; otherwise, I would not have known they were related. I reread the books recently, so it’s not like I’m relying on my old, not so reliable brain. Let’s just say, the biggest difference between the story was that in the books, the main character dies. In the movies, she lives. Now, I like the ending of the movie. The end of the book made me sad. But maybe instead of saying “based on,” this time it should have said “loosely based on” or “shares titles with…”

I happen to be a big Harry Potter fan. I have read all the books more than once. I also have watched the movies more than once. I know J.K. Rowling had a say in making the movies, so I know (or at least think) she must have had some say in the changes made in the movies. My only answer to people who tell me, “I only saw the movies” is “You don’t know the real story.” It is certainly possible to watch and enjoy the movies without reading the books. However…
