When I taught descriptive essays, I had my students use at least three of the five senses, but I warned them about the power of smell. I think it's the most powerful sense we have, as it can whisk us back to a memory faster than anything else. The smell of Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo still makes me sick. I used it once when I had morning sickness with my first child. She's 47 now. And my grandfather smoked that same cherry pipe tobacco. I smelled it as you wrote. Thanks for that memory.
