Instead of diagnosing the cause for a medical condition, doctors would look for the sin a patient had committed because it was believed that committing a sin was the source of sickness. Individuals who were sick were told that they have angered the gods through wrongdoing which is why they face a trial through sickness.

This belief remains in our society today. If you're sick, you did something wrong to deserve it. I think it's self defense: if I don't do anything wrong, I'll never get sick.
