Luckily, I've always lived in houses where the hot water heater is in the basement or garage. My son hasn't, though, and he and his family had to move into a hotel for a month while the damage was repaired from his broken hot water heater. So sorry to hear this. I flooded my bathroom floor today, but that was from giving 3 dogs baths. All will be well.
