I too am looking for a rescue, but I'm a terrier lover--Cairn, Norwich, Norfolk, and Border terriers. I have a Westie now, along with two mixed small dogs. Unfortunately, they are Chihuahua mixes, and if there's ever a breed you want to avoid, Chihuahuas are it. I had two Norwegian elkhounds, so I know about the coats. Every bird in my neighborhood had fur lined nests for 11 years.
